Whats the difference between MS Accountancy and Masters of Accounting?
Q. So whats the difference between a MS/Acccountancy and a Masters of accounting? I saw on another schools website that the MS/accountancy is just more intensive in terms of number of classes required, but their masters of accounting was technically an M.B.A. The school I plan on attending doesnt offer a Masters of Accounting so I'm not sure what the real difference is. Or is there not even really a "Masters of Accounting", but a M.B.A. which is just more of an accounting concentration?

A. Yes Masters of Accounting is the MBA and the MS Accounting is Masters of Science with accounting as your major

What is a good SMALL accountancy firm to train at in London? Does Big 4 give the best training?
Q. I'm not interested in Big 4 as I don't feel part of the culture. Also generally I am more comfortable around smaller numbers of people. But how can I find a good small accountancy firm in London? Anyone got recommendations? I want to train for the ACA and gain relevant experience in audit/tax/advisory etc. Do you think Big 4 is the only option for excellent training?

A. Big 4 does give the best training, but the second tier are getting stronger as well. The culture (that you say you don't feel a part of) will vary from firm to firm. I interviewed with three of the Big 4 plus 2 second tier and one other local firm. I am currently working for a Big 4 firm in a smaller office and the culture at our firm is very similar to that of a much smaller firm. I have only been with them for a short time and I already know everyone (including the partners) on a first name basis. The best part of the larger firms is that they will open your future up to far more opportunities. The hours are long, but assuming you can last for at least three years (senior level with certification), you can write your own ticket as to… [cont.]

What type of accountancy is the best to work in?
Q. All of the accountancy firms have lots of different types of accountants listed on their websites with regard to what types they deal in eg actuarial, assurance, advisory, tax, etc. I've heard from some people that which one you pick can have enormous impact - and that it's not as simple as just being 'an accountant'. If possible, I would like to know which ones there are, and how they differ in terms of what they do, how interesting/varied the work is, potential earnings, and what opportunities there are.
Asked by snootyjim - Fri Feb 22 11:26:48 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. It sounds like you are just starting out - you don't need to worry about making decisions like this early on. Through course of studies you may find differnt areas more interesting than others, and can chose to specialise from there. In broad terms anyway, you will still be a qualified accountant - which in itself is a highly valued qualification. Currently graduate accountants (i.e. those who have just left university) can command salaries far higher than those in almost all other standard degrees. There is a shortgage of good accoutnants, and although hard work can be very lucrative.

What do companies and employers demand more (Accountancy or Business Administration)?
Q. I have a choice between a master in Accountany or in Business Administration? Some friends advised me to go for the Accountancy so what do you think ?

A. I think that Accountancy is more safe - there are more jobs in the field. Business Administration is more versatile, however. However, to work in Accounting, you likely will want a CPA. You get that by fulfilling your states' requirements to sit for the CPA exam, which is usually a certain number of college-level accounting courses and passing the exam. So, you can still get a CPA without a degree in Accounting, however, you will probably end up getting a degree in Accounting while fulfilling those requirements. Business Administration has several aspects to it; Management, Marketing, and others depending on what school you are at. You may be able to get a more interesting job than with an accounting degree, depending on what you find… [cont.]

What courses are required for accountancy?
Q. So my major is accountancy, and I am starting college 2008 Spring semester(didn't go to first semester after graduate). I was wondering, what classes are required for my major? And what classes should I take? instead of wasting money on classes that doesn't help me with this major.

A. You'll want to meet with your academic advisor and go over your degree plan as soon as possible, either immediately before or immediately after you enroll for your first semester. In the meantime... Most bachelor's degree programs require some of the same basics, include two courses in English composition/rhetoric; two courses in U.S. history; and courses in math, government, social sciences, visual arts, and possibly some others. Business degrees in particular may have somewhat more stringent requirements in terms of math (finite, calculus, and statistics), as well as computer literacy and professional speaking. In addition, most business majors will be required to take entry-level courses in management, marketing, economics (both… [cont.]

Q. How is the Masters of Accounting/Accountancy program at UNC Chapel Hill? Is this one of the best programs in the nation? Could I get in if I have a 680 on the GMAT and a 3.75 GPA?

A. I'm also applying to Chapel Hill. According to their website, the average GMAT is 635 and the average GPA is 3.38. That being said, you look pretty good. I'm wondering if I can get in myself. I have a 710 GMAT but only a 3.1 GPA. The website also states that the program "is ranked No. 9 in accounting among top business schools by U.S. News & World Report. Our Master of Accounting program was ranked 7th in the 2007 Public Accounting Report." Hope to see you there. Good luck.

Q. I am very bad in communication and also in public relations but interested in studying accountancy so just want to confirm is accountancy a public related subject. Is there alot of communication involved in this area?

A. A lot depends on what position you are in the company. If you do not want grow in a company and restrict yourself to back office, then public speaking may not be involved. If you are at managerial level, then you have to make presentations. If I were you, I would rather go for a public speaking course for a couple months and get confident in that area. Then I have the option to choose what I like rather than being fearful of public speaking.

A. The link below actually lists organisations that are environmentally conscious. But maybe you should consider how to bring environmental issues into where you are now? I have always raised issues on recycling, sustainable and fair trade procurement policies, energy conservation and cherishing diversity whereever I have worked - sometimes they listen sometimes they don't.
