Islam (Arabic: الإسلام‎ al-’islām, pronounced [ʔislæːm] ( listen)) is the religion articulated by the Qur’an, a book considered by its adherents to be the verbatim word of the single incomparable God (Arabic: الله‎, Allāh), and by the Islamic prophet Muhammad's demonstrations and real-life examples (called the Sunnah, collected through narration of his companions in collections of Hadith). The word Islam is a homograph, having multiple meanings, and a triliteral of the word salaam, which directly translates as peace. Other meanings include submission, or the total surrender of oneself to God (see Islam (term)). When the two root words are put together, the word 'Islam' gives the meaning 'Peace acquired by submission to the will of God'.

An adherent of Islam is a Muslim, meaning "one who submits (to God)". The word Muslim is the active participle of the same verb of which Islām is the infinitive. Muslims regard their religion as the completed and universal version of a monotheistic faith revealed at many times and places before, including, notably, to the prophets Abraham, Moses and Jesus. Islamic tradition holds that previous messages and revelations have been changed and distorted over time.

Religious practices include the Five Pillars of Islam, which are five duties that unite Muslims into a community. Islamic law (Arabic: شريعة Šarīʿah) touches on virtually every aspect of life and society, encompassing everything from dietary laws and banking to warfare, welfare, and Jihad. The vast majority of Muslims belong to one of two major denominations, the Sunni (87-90%) and Shi'a (10-13%).

Islam is the predominant religion in much of Africa, the Middle East and major parts of Asia. Large communities are also found in China, Russia and the Caribbean. About 13% of Muslims live in Indonesia, the largest Muslim country, 31% in the Indian Subcontinent, and 20% in Arab countries. Converts and immigrant communities are found in almost every part of the world. With 1.57 billion Muslims (see Islam by country), Islam is the second-largest religion in the world and arguably the fastest growing religion in the world.

How legitimate is it to denounce Islam with the following argument?
Q. "Islam came after Christianity - Christianity is hundreds of years older than Islam - and is similar to Christianity in many, many ways. Hence The Koran is just a spurious carbon-copy of The Bible, with "Jesus Christ" scratched out everywhere it appears and "Mohammed" scribbled in. Anyone who can denounce Christianity and espouse Islam with a straight face is obviously unsound." I have *many* friends who make this very argument, and I'd like to know how sound it is. Thanks.

A. 1. The day-to-day life of the Prophet was an open book for all to see. In fact a revelation came asking people to give the Prophet (pbuh) privacy in his own home. If the Prophet had been meeting people who told him what to say as a revelation from God, this would not have been hidden for very long. 2. The extremely prominent Quraish nobles who followed the Prophet and accepted Islam were wise and intelligent men who would have easily noticed anything suspicious about the way in which the Prophet brought the revelations to them - more so since the Prophetic mission lasted 23 years. 3. The enemies of the Prophet kept a close watch on him in order to find proof for their claim that he was a liar - they could not point out even a… [cont.]

How come radical Islam is the religion causing problems in the world, yet the UN doesnt want us to say that?
Q. Like the world for some reason is scared to speak out against radical Islam. And the UN doesn't want anybody saying anything bad against Islam, whether it be regular Islam or radical Islam. Doesn't this mean that the radicals are actually WINNING?

A. It's not any particular religion that's causing the world's problems it's the radical extremists of each culture. The war mongering sects in each culture are destroying the world. They've only disguised their political agendas under Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. Hitler didn't represent Christianity, Zionists don't represent Judaism and the luney towel heads don't represent Islam. At least not to the well informed, educated people.

Can you compare pillars of Islam with others in your religion ?
Q. Pillars of Islam are the framework of the Muslim life: faith in God and Mohammed (PBUH) as prophet of Islam..., self-purification and prayer, concern for the needy, fasting , and the pilgrimage to Makkah for those who are able.

A. The five pillars of Islam that is: 1) Shahadah (profession of faith) 2) Salah (ritual prayer) 3) Zakah (alms tax) 4) Sawm (fasting during Ramadan) 5) Hajj (pilgrimage to Mecca) All these can be comparable to my religion which is Hinduism. Hindus also have to have faith in One and Only One God. The Vedas ask all Hindus to believe in Only one Creator and his many different avatars that came to earth in human form. Hindus are also advised to pray to God regularly. Yoga was one of the ideal ways that was used by Lord Shiva, himself, to meditate. Hindus are also taught to give alms and everything possible to poor people. Hindus also fast during special days. Hindus also travel to holy places without wearing a top just like Muslims.

Islam is a monotheistic religion originating with prophet Muhammad, a 7th century Arab, and centered on the religious text known as the Qur'an. It is the second-largest religion in the world today, with an estimated 1.84 billion adherents, spread across the globe, known as Muslims.[1] Linguistically, Islam means submission, referring to the total surrender of one's self to God (Arabic: الله, Allāh), and a Muslim is "one who submits to God".
